Virginia grants all taxpayers an automatic 6-month extension of time to file (not to pay). The extended tax return due date is November 1, 2019. You do not need to file a form to get a Virginia state tax extension.

If you expect to owe taxes, and you are going to take advantage of the automatic extension of time to file, you should still pay what you owe and submit an Extension Payment Form 760IP before May 1, 2019.

To avoid the penalty for late payment, you must pay at least 90% of what you owe by May 1, 2019. If you file later than 6 months after the original filing deadline, you will be penalized for failing to file as well as for failing to pay.

An extension penalty of 2% per month (to a maximum of 12%) will apply to the balance of tax due with your return, from the original tax return deadline through the date of filing. If you file your return within the extension period but do not pay the full balance of tax due with your return, the balance due will be subject to a late payment penalty of 6% per month from the date of filing through the date of payment, to a maximum of 30%. The late payment penalty will be assessed in addition to any extension penalty that may apply. If you file your tax return more than six months after the original due date, the extension will be canceled and a late filing penalty of 30% will be applied to the balance of tax due with the return.
