Myopia, or nearsightedness, one of the most common refractive errors, is a global epidemic affecting 25% of the world population. The global incidence of myopia is projected to rise to 50% worldwide by 2050, raising concerns of possible environmental and behavioral risks. Long-term effects of myopia include devastating vision impairment and comorbidities, some of which can lead to blindness.

Although a genetic predisposition to myopia exists, a dramatic global increase of this vision impairment in the past 20 years requires attention to environmental and behavioral risk factors. Therefore, primary prevention is key to decreasing the prevalence of this vision impairment.

Clinician knowledge of the risk factors associated with myopia along with combined and coordinated efforts of government, education, and health care systems are essential to reduce the prevalence and morbidity of myopia. Can you help prevent myopia? Test your knowledge with this short quiz.
