“Dementia” refers to various symptoms of impaired cognitive functioning and other behavioral abilities. Multiple neuropathologic processes may be responsible, including neurodegenerative diseases and vascular disease. Approximately 47 million people currently live with dementia worldwide; by 2050, an almost threefold increase is expected, with an estimated 131 million people predicted to have some form of dementia.
