What search engines look for from your website?

When you design your new website, or you hire a website designer, the following key points should be emphasized.

1. Easier navigation is more important than pretty looks.

2. Search engines read text, not image. Text is what they index.

3. Use minimal or no Flash. This has been discussed among many designers and SEO . Designers still want to use flash because it looks trendy. But here is website owners have to decide to minimize Flash for their new business website:

Flash usually takes longer time to load.
Back button doesn’t work with Flash.
Most importantly, search engines don’t read Flash. Some search engines have started to index them, but only when there is good text description about it.

4. Use CSS rather than tables. Don’t use Font tags or other old style depreciated HTML tags. If you need to use Table tags, remember to add summary attribute in the main Table tag to explain what the table is about to
search engines.

5. Try not to use much JavaScript. If you have to, make it an external file.

<script language=”JavaScript” src=”JavascriptName.js” type=”text/JavaScript”></script>

Great tips, I don’t know when you wrote this post. But it was totally useful for me. I was thinking for this SEF website but was not sure what should be there.
