However, the IRS and the respective state tax agencies require you to e-file a federal income tax return at the same time you efile a state tax return. This is not an efile.com policy but an IRS and state agency policy. Many taxpayers have asked how they can only prepare and file a state income tax return. The efile.com tax application lets you prepare a state tax return only, however you cannot efile the state return upon completion. Instead, you will have to download the completed state tax return as a PDF file, print it, sign it, and mail it to the respective state – the address is on the PDF file. Prepare and efile these state forms for 2018 in conjunction with your federal and state income tax return. As you proceed through the tax interview on efile.com, the application will select the correct state forms for you. You can also select tax forms individually. If your New Mexico state return was rejected by the state and not efile.com, you will receive an error reject code. If you are certain that you cannot file your New Mexico return by the deadline, you do not need to file for an extension. You will automatically receive a 6-month extension of time to file your return (not to pay). The extended tax return due date is October 15, 2019. Please be aware that New Mexico will not accept the federal extension form as an extension for your New Mexico tax return. However, if you expect to owe income taxes, you should submit your payment with payment voucher Form RPD-41096. If you efiled your return and are making a payment by check or money order, you must complete a Form RPD-41096 on efile.com. If you are making a payment by credit card, a Form RPD-41096 is not needed. If you are making an automatic extension payment, you also must use Form RPD-41096 unless it is made electronically. New Mexico’s general gross receipts tax (the state’s term for sales tax) is 5.125%.

The combined gross receipts tax rate varies throughout the state. The total rate is a combination of all rates imposed by the state, counties, and municipalities. It is more than 8% in some jurisdictions.

New Mexico has an annual “New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday”. It usually occurs on the first weekend of August (midnight Friday through midnight Sunday). Certain items are exempt from New Mexico sales tax. However, the NM consumer will only receive the tax exemption if a specific total spending limit is met.

Taxes are generally not assessed on personal property. Personal household effects, registered aircraft, licensed vehicles, certain personal property warehoused in the state, and business personal property that is not depreciated for federal income tax purposes are exempt from the tax.

New Mexico has a head of family exemption rather than a homestead exemption. Eligible residents must apply for it only once to receive it in subsequent years. The exemption must be for the property in which the owner resides in the State of New Mexico. Only one family exemption per household is permitted.

The state’s personal income tax rates are based on the federal adjusted gross income rates. New Mexico uses the same dollar amounts as the IRS for standard deductions, personal exemptions, and itemized deductions.
