Alcohol use is the third-leading cause of preventable death in the United States. The Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the harmful use of alcohol results in about 3 million deaths worldwide each year, which is 5.3% of all deaths. Alcohol abuse can result in numerous serious health conditions, including liver disease, cancer, and stroke. Although the dangers of alcohol use (alcoholism) are well known, data suggest that physicians frequently fail to make the diagnosis.
