Dear Writer, You Are Allowed To Create Your Own Boundaries

Dear Writer, You Are Allowed To Create Your Own Boundaries

It’s your work and your call. Nobody else can decide what’s optimal for your work except you. Hobbyist, part-timer, or full-time writer? Only you can decide what’s best for you.

You might need a break from reading, chatting with others in the writing community, and even from writing yourself. Do whatever you must do to avoid or treat burn out. Do you best to take these breaks without guilt.

You aren’t a bad person if protecting your mental health means you don’t always read and respond to every comment. You’re simply human.

Writers today face more pressure than ever to be accessible to their readers 24/7, but you’re a person and not a robot. Take whatever time you need.

In an ideal world, we could say yes to every email, every request to edit, and every other favor people ask of you because of your work. Be generous wherever you can, but don’t be afraid to say no when you need to.

Frustration and rejection are pretty standard experiences for any writer. You get to feel those things and find a way to deal with them in a positive way.

Whatever accolades or goals you reach with your writing? They matter. Don’t let other people tell you that you shouldn’t celebrate your wins, because you certainly should.

It’s hard to spend all evening on social media after spending all day writing. And it’s even harder to balance family or personal time with that writing. If you need to set boundaries to limit your time on social media or electronic devices, do it.

You are not some inherently selfish monster when you have to focus inward on your own projects. It’s perfectly healthy and normal to experience an ebb and flow where you focus on your own work at times and then collaborate with and support those other writers too.

Writers get a lot of feedback. It’s inevitable. But at the end of the day, it’s important to be the kind of writer that suits… you. Writing whatever you think other people will like won’t serve you in the long run if you don’t love it too.

Nobody else can or will do it for you. If you don’t guard your mental health, you can’t be as present as you need to be in your work or personal life. Set boundaries. Create office hours. Do whatever you need to do to stay healthy and positive.
