Hi everyone I’m new here x

Last year I supported my dad through bladder cancer. He had 2 weeks chemo and 12 weeks radiotherapy. He has some red patches on the bladder   and he received the all clear in April.

The problem is  he now has some blood in the urine. Is this normal? Can a tumour grow back so soon (if its going to)

Are we ever free of worry…. ..

Would appreciate your thoughts xx

Hi Treacle0101.

This should be reported back to the hospital.  You father should have received the phone number for a nurse specialist and should use this number to leave a message.  I expect they’ll want to do a cystoscopy.

Once you’ve been touched by cancer, the worry never goes away completely.  There’s something about the word “cancer” which gives it more power than it deserves.

That’s good advice. .Thankyou telemando

That’s the best thing to do isn’t it. Rather than just hoping “it’ll go away”

Xx

I had a TURBT for early bladder cancer on June 3rd.  I was told that if I get any blood then I’m to phone the nurse specialist. I haven’t had any so far, but I am due a routine follow up cystoscopy soon (no date yet).

This is my second brush with cancer, having had a radical prostatectomy back in 2010.

I had surgery for prostate cancer back in 2010, and then bladder cancer this year.  I’m just waiting to get my cancer hat-trick.

Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that your dad had treatment for bladder cancer and I can see that you are worried about blood in his urine.

I am afraid that we are unable to say if this is an indication that the cancer has come back. There could be other reasons for it such as infection or a possible late side effect of the treatment he has had. You dad really does need to let his specialist team know about this, this could be his Clinical Nurse Specialist, as they may want to investigate it.

I hope you and your dad can find out why this is happening soon. Meanwhile you are welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Take care,

Caroline
