Your morning coffee comes with real benefits: Just one serving delivers powerful antioxidants, caffeine, and rich flavor to keep you energized for hours. But what you choose to add to your brew can affect your metabolism — for good, or for bad.

With all the amazing things coffee can do, you’ll want to keep all the benefits in your mug — and that means skipping the added junk that keeps you from reaching your goals. Here’s the one coffee add-in that slows down your metabolism, plus swaps you can make to stay on your game.

Coffee won’t slow your metabolism -- but added junk will. Learn why this common coffee add-in slows you down, and what to add to your morning brew instead.

Forget the myth that coffee slows down your performance. Science proves time and time again that your morning joe delivers big benefits for your well-being and metabolism:

Plus, it just tastes good. While research solidifies coffee as a nutritious food, adding certain ingredients to your brew will dull some of these benefits — and keep you from feeling your best.

Not everyone likes black coffee, but you aren’t doing yourself any favors if you add artificial creamers to your cup.

While they add flavor to your mug, creamers load your coffee with ingredients that will make you feel foggy and fatigued. The most popular non-dairy creamers contain inflammatory franken-foods like dried corn syrup and vegetable oil, which won’t support steady energy or weight loss. Added flavors and sweeteners in these creamers can also spike blood sugar (and cravings).

Beware of other options for adding creamy flavor to your coffee, too. Anything with pasteurized dairy contains damaged fats, plus casein and lactose that can cause digestive distress or trigger allergies. Even plant-based creamers with almond or coconut milks contain added sugar or binders that mess with your gut bacteria, which can ultimately impact your metabolism.

No matter how you sip it, creamers won’t help you get all the amazing benefits of coffee. If you want a smooth tasting brew that won’t sabotage your health goals, though, you still have options.
