The 5-minute design brief
My goal here is to suggest a better way to write a design brief. By better, I mean, can we ask questions that will give us a better outcome. Five minutes is the time it takes to present or share the brief, not write it, and certainly not to discuss it. Discussions might take a significant amount of time. What are you creating? Describe the thing you are creating in a paragraph or less. For example:
What we think this thing is valuable for and why? Describe why this new thing needs to exist through the lens of customer value. For example:
How is this addition aligned with our product vision and our company mission? Describe how this new addition signals our product-level vision and company level mission and values. For example:
Who is this valuable for? Why should they care? Describe why this new thing needs to exist through the lens of customer value in a paragraph or less. For example:
How much of an impact will this feature have on the customer’s excitement or satisfaction of the overall product? Can you validate desire? For example:
What is the outcome we are trying to achieve? What do we need to accomplish to create that outcome? For example:
What is the experience we’re creating and whats the enduring memory we’re hoping to create? For example:
How much time do we have to create this design? Who else needs to be considered in this cycle? For example:
Who in the product org will this new design effect? For example:
