Hi,

My boyfriend had base of tongue cancer and just finished chemotherapy and radiotherapy mid Feb. He is having such problems with eating because everything burns his tongue. He wakes up in the morning with his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth, when he moves his tongue it then bleeds so it’s constantly sore and not healing. I was just wondering if anyone would have any solutions/recommendations to help. The oncology nurse told him about a tablet u put on ur gum at night to help with the dry mouth but it’s not working very well. He just wants to eat now as he is fed up with drinking fortisips.

Thank you x

Hello Emma666

I’m sorry to hear about your boyfriend’s diagnosis and how he’s struggling with the side effects of his treatment.

We have quite a few members here on the forum who have been through treatment for oral cancers and I know from reading their posts that it can take quite some time for things to settle. Can I suggest that you have a look for posts by @RadioactiveRaz ‍ , @Taff123 ‍ , and @Anchor1707 ‍ . All these members have been through treatment for oral cancers and have described some of the problems that you’ve mentioned. They have all also written their own blogs about their journeys and I’m sure that you’ll be able to find some advice and information in those stories. You might also like to have a look through some of the information on our website here

I’d also suggest that you give our team of nruses a call. They’re available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I’m sure they will be able to give you some support and advice to try and help.

Do get back in touch with your boyfriend’s nurse specialist as well. It is their role to advise and support but they can only do this if they know that the problem hasn’t been resolved. Give her a call as well.

I hope some of this helps and that things begin to settle and heal soon.

Best wishes,
Jenn

Hi Hazel, thank you so so much for replying to my post. I have had a look at your blog and it’s great, very informative and it has also given me hope that things will be ok. And if there not, then we are not alone.

You really are a star,

Thank you Emma x

Hi Emma

I finished 4 weeks radiotherapy to my mouth in January this year and I can tell you I still have a sore toungue and swelling inside my cheek. I was actually thinking that it should be better than it is but reading on this site and other places it seems to be how it is. I know someone who had similar and he said he still had pain over a year later, he’s been cancer free for 13 years now.

Wishing you & your boyfriend the best of luck.
Neil
