Hi, I’m 37had my 4th smear this year always on time! My previous 3 have always been clear and results back within a week! However my 4th one back in Jan I was thinking was taking a while longer to come back! When it did it said I was HPV positive! Which has freaked me out I keep saying to my partner his given me an STD we did split for a bit but know where he went in that time!! So I have to go back in jan for the year check up but this result keeps coming back to haunt me! I had an aunt on my mums side who had ovarian/cervical cancer. I’m on the implant so don’t have a period with previous ones however this one I’m two years into and sometimes have a bit of what I call a “dirty period” no warning can appear in underwear like bloody discharge but when I wipe from toilet looks blood on tissue! Same time as having my smear I was a bit stressed so had a couple of these a few weeks apart! Could that just of been down to the stress ‍♀️ Nothing happened since beginning of year but do you think worth going back to docs before the year up with my concerns? (Sorry for the essay)

Hello Lizzie  and thanks for posting,

Contraceptive implants can cause irregular and unpredictable bleeding or stop periods altogether, but as you are worried, I think it would be a good idea to talk to your GP. They are best placed to reassure you.

It sounds like your HPV positive result has been playing on your mind. Bear in mind that most people’s immune systems get on top of HPV so no harm comes as a results of having it. If HPV persists then it can trigger abnormal cells which could much later go on to develop into cancer, but this is where screening comes into the picture by picking up abnormal cells and treating them if needed. If it happens, it can take a long time (years and years ) for cervical cancer to develop after picking up HPV.

Do talk everything over with your GP, I hope they can put your mind at rest.

Best wishes,

Julia
