Worried it could be testicular cancer.
Hi, first of all sorry for the long post but I just need to get this off my chest and I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight. So I found a lump on my left testicle six years ago. The lump is firm like a frozen pea and is just below the epididymis towards the top of the testicle, however it feels more like it’s on the testicle itself. If I press the testicle against the skin of my scrotum I can actually see the outline of the lump under the skin. Judging by some pictures I’ve seen it looks like it could be around the same position where the appendix of the testis seems to be although there isn’t much information on what it feels like. When I initially found it in 2014 I went to the doctors three times before being referred to an ultrasound. At the ultrasound they could not see the lump so I decided to put it out of my mind after visiting three different doctors, none of whom seemed that concerned, and not seeing anything in the ultrasound. So fast forward six years later, I would say the lump has slightly grown (nothing major, maybe about 1cm) although it’s hard to tell for sure. The testicle itself feels ok (not too firm compared with the other). I’m not too sure why it’s started bothering me again but I guess never being told what it 100% is when I originally had my ultrasound and it still being there has made me concerned it could be testicular cancer and it’s gone undiagnosed for six years. I know the only way I can know for sure is to get it checked again but any insight anyone could give me into similar experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Would I likely have noticed a major change in six years if it was something serious? And is it likely the ultrasound would have picked it up if it was cancer? There’s not much out there about having a lump for this long and I’m trying not to read too much on the internet to freak myself out.

Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the lump on your testicle that is bothering you.

Try not to worry as it seems this lump has been there for quite some years and hasn’t changed much in that time it is unlikely to be anything serious. It is also reassuring to know the ultrasound you had when you first noticed it was normal with no suspicious findings.

As this seems to be playing on your mind it is worth mentioning it to your GP so they can take a look just to be on the safe side. Hopefully they will be able to put your mind at ease but if they are unsure they can arrange some further tests.

Wishing you all the best

Naomi

Hi Tom.

I think as Nurse Naomi says – if it’s been there for six years then it’s unlikely to be anything too serious, particularly since you had a clear ultrasound.

However, if you’re anything like me, then you won’t be satisfied until you’ve seen your GP and been checked out again.  This will probably nag you, so I suggest you make an appointment for your own peace of mind.

Hi Naomi.

Thanks very much for getting back to me. I’ll look at seeing my GP just to check it again for peace of mind. It’s helpful to hear from professionals such as yourself on the forum for their opinions on it too though and has helped make me feel more at ease.

Just one other question, can epididymal cysts also be hard/firm? There’s a lot of conflicting things online with some saying that they can be firm and others saying they can only be soft and squidgy.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Telemando.

Really appreciate the feedback. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at things online that it’s the worst possible outcome.

I can definitely say I’m the same in that I won’t be satisfied until I know for sure so I’ll look at going to see the GP again just for a quick check.

Thanks for taking the time to help put my mind slightly more at ease.

Hi Tom. It’s for the best.  Just don’t be surprised or alarmed if the doctor asks for a repeat of the ultrasound scan.   Ultrasound scans are very cheap and it’s probably a sensible precaution to get some more up-to-date pictures. No need to panic.

Hello and thanks for getting back with another question.

I think it is fair to say that things present differently in people. Testicular lumps or swellings are commonly caused by either fluid filled cysts that may feel soft or firm or a varicocele (knobbly swollen veins).

Try not to over think or google any more if you can as this is likely to make you more anxious. Instead arrange a time to speak with your GP who hopefully can put your mind at ease.

Take care

Naomi
