Hi I’ve been told today during a telephone consultation that I have Bowen’s Disease. Apart from being shocked I’m also wondering how this can be diagnosed via photos of the lesions and without a biopsy? I phoned back to query this and the consultant’s secretary said he must be sure of the diagnosis without a biopsy. Should I go along with this diagnosis without being seen first? The consultant is sending me a prescription for cream to apply for 4 weeks which apparently burns through the layers of skin to get rid of the cells which sounds pretty horrendous!! Can I ask for opinions and advice please. Thanks very much.

Hello Shapira

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been dealing with concerns about a lesion on your skin. It’s understandable that you’re feeling concerned.

If you’re still not happy about the diagnosis process then do get back in touch with the Consultant’s secretary and ask tell her that you’d like to speak to one of the team.

Alternatively you could give our team of nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. It may be that they are able to offer you some advice and reassurance.

Best wishes,

Hi

I had a patch of skin on my shoulder for quite a while, sort of pink and dry. I tried hydrocortisone etc but nothing made any difference. I went to my GP who did a biopsy and this came back as Bowens. Never heard of it before and when I was told without treatment it could turn cancerous I went home in tears. That word!!! I had an appointment at hospital dermotology and had it frozen off, was painful as it became swollen, almost like a red jellytot! Anyway that was 6 years ago, I was told I would probably get more but I haven’t yet…. although I was diagnosed with a different cancer the same year!

Hi, recently found on my body what looks to be Bowen’s, I’m wondering if any of you had photos etc. I’ve been given cream to use for 6 weeks but obviously with Covid this has all been through phone/photos. (Don’t know if you can even post photos) thanks
