So I was diagnosed with skin cancer and now diagnosed with sarcoids which affects your lungs, skin, liver and HEART. My kids are returning to school and I am very concerned, I have no choice otherwise we get a fine. My daughter age 6 has no clue how to protect her self and will probably not keep a mask on. They year group are aloud to mix, touch and not have a mask, very worried as it is 30 children. My other daughter is going to say school in reception and it will probably be the same for her. My two older boys are going to secondary school, one the eldest is sensible but the other brother I don’t think he will take this seriously. For my two nursery children they have a bubble of 5 children each, also touching, close contact ahh. Bit annoyed and feel useless that there’s nothing I can do. Anyone know if I have rights to do anything about this?

Hi and thanks for your post

I can imagine that for many parents who have health problems, sending their children back to school will at the beginning especially, create a lot of anxiety and stress.

There isn’t really an easy response to your query, as children will need their education and as the pandemic may potentially still be ongoing for the next year or so, before a vaccine is found, this will be a constant dilemma.

I’m sure you’ve talked things through with your children in different ways according to their ages already, about how they need to do their best to protect themselves, family and friends. I don’t know whether you’ve told the older ones about your condition and how it’s important to keep you protected .

It’s usually a good idea to tell the schools and nursery’s head and teachers about your health and the difficult situation you are in, so they are aware. It’s also something to discuss with your specialist who has all your medical details, to see if they can give you any further advice.

As to what your rights may be, I’m assuming you mean about sending them in to school. For many children, not going in to school is causing many mental health problems and problems with socialising, so as well as concerns about  your own health, there is this aspect to think about too. The link here   to Child Law Advice may be of some help in giving more information about where you stand regarding your rights.

The Sarcoidosis charity   has a community forum which may also have posts from people in a similar position to yourself and they may be able to say how they are dealing with this.

In case your children are showing signs of anxiety about going to school, there is some information here about how to best support them and talk to them about the importance of being careful

I can understand this is going to be a stressful time for you all- I’m afraid there isn’t an easy way round this and I wish there was something which would take the risk of covid away from everyone- sadly, it’s just not possible to take risk away.

Do give us a call if you would like to go over any of this. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best

Wanda
