After dedicating myself for the last 5 years to building my off the grid dream house, I decided to hyper-focus on my business in 2019. I even went a step further, after realizing I had let my business slide during the last 2 years of my project, by deciding to work for a year straight. No vacations, no full days off just one year of pure dedication to getting my Simple Life message out and growing the business.
I know what you are thinking “that doesn’t sound like simple living or happiness to me?” Let me explain: When you really enjoy what you do for a living it is not really work in the traditional sense. I do not live by a time clock, grind in traffic everyday, work in a cubical, or do something I hate or dislike. My boss is a jerk, but I’m working on that 🙂
I thought by re-committing myself to growing the business for a year would: 1) Be an interesting experiment to see what would actually happen. 2) See if it was something that was actually possible with positive results.
I came in with one primary rule if I felt I was starting to suffer from burnout, or was really not liking what I was doing I would stop. A sub-rule was no 8-10 hour days everyday, only when needed. I have done that in the past, and it is a fast road to Nuttyland! I’m about halfway through, so I thought it would be a good idea to tell you (my followers) and anyone else reading this blog how it was going. I will do another update at the end of the year.
I will say this, so far nothing too bad has happened – I’m not burned out or regretting my decision. Now for the surprise that I didn’t see coming. By re-dedicating myself primarily to my business something interesting happened. I became incredibly efficient at managing my time and the tasks needed to be successful. My business has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 6 months with numerous additional projects around the corner. Projects I didn’t think I would be able to get to in the next two years. I’m not going to lie, I’m shocked a bit by the results.
Now, not to say this happened overnight, as I have been refining my business and my business model for almost a decade. An overnight success that took a decade… right!
Matter of fact things have been going so well, I finished my day by around 10:30 AM on Saturday, and actually found myself bored. Some people have heard me talk about this in some of my interviews over the years while living off the grid and traveling in my RV. One of the main things you have to adapt to when living the simple life is having a lot more free time. Then how to fill that new found free time with things that move your life in a positive direction, and not hours of looking at pictures and videos of cats on Facebook.
It is pretty interesting the longer I do this experiment the more efficient I seem to get. I think part of it, by getting in the mindset of dedicating myself to this for a year, I really focused on not having any distractions get in the way. My mind went into hardcore “get it done” mode.
The result? I have found I have far more free time than I thought I would. But I have also realized not to push it, and create additional unproductive work to fill in the time. When it comes to working on your business there are times when you are done, and have to move onto something else.
I will say this in closing. I’m pretty confident this will be the most productive and enjoyable year in my life and that is something I didn’t see coming. I guess it is just another positive side effect of living the simple life!

Recently I was interviewed for two free webinars – Your Life, Your Legacy and The Fitness Journey. I usually don’t participate in these, but I thought you (A Simple Life insider) could definitely benefit from some of the information provided. Plus, I do give my insights on living the simple life, living off the grid and primal health during my two interviews. If you are a new follower of mine and being a part of the simple life insider group this might be a way for you to learn a little bit more about me. April was a hectic month with the release of my new book The Simple Life Guide To Decluttering Your Life (Click this link to purchase), and heading back to my off grid house for the next 7 months.
I’ll share more in my next post, but a little sneak preview – I’m in the editing phase of my next book The Simple Life Guide To Financial Freedom, which I think is going to be a game changer for a lot of people. If you haven’t already signed up for my newsletter (click here) I highly recommend you do as that is where you find out about all my updates.
As I have just released my third book, and the year isn’t even half way over I have been getting some questions primarily, “you are working really hard how are you living the simple life you describe in your teachings?” I will say that is a very fair question, and I have an honest answer, as always, no BSing in Gary land 🙂 Some people misconstrue The Simple Life, as a way of life that doesn’t require hard work, while some think you just hangout all day in your bathrobe waiting for people to feed you grapes. Luckily, most people who follow me are motivated to make a change for the better in their life and understand hard work is required. But there have been a some here and there squawking “oh the way you did it is really expensive I’ll never be able to afford that” or “I can’t do what you did” insert any of numerous excuses here. I will guarantee with that attitude you will not be able to live the life you want. I have a saying:
It is official my new book The Simple Life Guide To Decluttering Your Life: The How-To Book of Doing More with Less and Focusing on the Things That Matter is available in print and digital! (see below for purchasing options)
This is the third book in The Simple Life series, and I really enjoyed writing it. It wasn’t easy, as I get into some touchy subjects that most people will not touch in similar books. But as I say in this book, these are the elephants in the room, and if you don’t address them I believe you are making your life more difficult than it has to be. Trust me I have been there, so I don’t pull these out of thin air – just like everyone else I have made a few wrong turns in my life. I’m a firm believer in getting to the point and ripping the band aid off your problems or difficulties. If you are looking to pet fluffy bunny rabbits and chase unicorns this book is probably not for you… or maybe it is just what you need 🙂
