What To Pack in An Urban Survival Kit
Food Storage, Gardening, and Self-Reliance for Busy Moms
We talked about various survival kits and bug out bags to have ready, but most of those are centered around being prepared for a disaster or a situation where you need to leave. This urban survival kit is something you can keep in your bag every day and have it ready for anything that might happen while you go about your daily life. Here is what you should always have in your bag to be ready for both emergency situations and daily occurrences!
You are probably already familiar with this piece of advice. Carry cash with you to be financially prepared for any situation, even if there is a power cut and your card doesn’t work. Try not to keep the emergency cash in your wallet, so you make sure you aren’t tempted to dip into it. Put it in a Ziploc bag to keep it all dry and in one place. Pack it with the rest of the items on this list.
Another important thing to have in your bag at all times, especially when you are on the go, is a first aid kit. It should contain the basic elements:
Make sure to check that all the items are viable and replace them as they expire. Here is a quick guide to building your own first aid kid only with items from the dollar store! Also, include extra doses of any prescription medicine you need to take, and a pair of glasses in a hard case if you normally wear glasses or contacts.
Keep copies of important paperwork, like ID and insurance papers, as well as any other paperwork you might need. Include medical records, if possible, and put them all in an airtight Ziploc bag to prevent them from being damaged. Inspect the papers occasionally and replace and update as needed. You should also add a list of phone numbers, along with names and your relationship with each person on the list. This will allow you to contact them even when you don’t have your phone available.
It might not seem like a necessity, but a Swiss army knife or a similar multitool has proven itself to be lifesaving time and time again, even in the big city. After all, to survive the urban jungle you need to be able to open stubborn packages and cut an apple as much as, if not more often than you need to patch up a wound. Keeping one of these multitools handy will help you in absence of scissors and other tools. Not to mention that most Swiss army knives include a pair of tweezers, as well as a corkscrew.
Include personal items and products in your urban survival kit, like Chapstick, hand cream, and feminine hygiene products. They will come in handy in a medical emergency, and you can be a lifesaving hero when someone around you needs a little help. Either future you or your friends will be grateful for your preparedness! This category includes, among other things, tissues, intimate or face wipes, and disinfectant hand gel.
It’s a must-have in any bag, along with a change of batteries. Preferably, the flashlight is waterproof, and the batteries are stored in a waterproof bag. These will help you in many circumstances: when you need to unlock a door in the dark, when there is a power cut, or during actual emergency situations. Keep the flashlight easily accessible, preferably at the very top of the bag, because that will be the first thing you will want to find.
While this might be an unusual element in a survival bag or bug out bag, for urban environments it is a must have! From a torn button to any other kind of wardrobe malfunction, a sewing kit can become the difference between a great day and a ruined one. Imagine showing up for that big presentation with a button missing or a torn seam. Now, isn’t it better to have the safety of a sewing kit available?
Now that you have the essential items all gathered, it’s time to pack it all up. The best advice is to use a waterproof bag for packing, as it will give you some extra protection. Use one that can be closed with a zip rather than buttons because it will last longer. Also, try to avoid external pockets that things can fall out of. Search for something that can fit in almost any bag you own and is easy to transfer. Ideally, when you switch bags, you can just grab your urban survival kit and move it to the new bag easily.
You can include a miniature version of this kit in your children’s schoolbag and teach them to carry it around. Replace the scissors with paper scissors, remove the multitool and some of the more complex items from the first aid kit, limit the amount of cash, and teach the little ones to use the remaining items correctly. And while a three-year-old will do just as well with just wet wipes, tissues, and a flashlight, a thirteen-year-old could really use the whole kit.
Now you know how to build an urban survival kit and what to put in it! Gather your items and toss them in your bag. You will be very much prepared for anything your day-to-day life might throw your way.
