Burnout, though not new, worsened during the pandemic. In “Beyond Burned Out,” Jennifer Moss presents new research showing the true depths of burnout in 2020 and urges readers to focus on organizational solutions, such as giving employees a sense of purpose, decreasing their workloads, making it safe to talk about their mental health at work, becoming a more empathetic manager, and facilitating connections with others. In “What Covid-19 Has Done to Our Well-Being, in 12 Charts,” Macaulay Campbell and Gretchen Gavett use new research data to highlight how people have been affected by the pandemic. Specifically, the data shows that the vast majority of people report a decline in well-being, in their lives and in their work. Included are respondents’ personal comments. Michael Leiter and Christina Maslach, two of the world’s preeminent burnout researchers, share their thoughts on burnout and the pandemic in an interview titled “How the Pandemic Exacerbated Burnout.” Touching on some of the industries where burnout is particularly high, they explain the biggest mistakes companies make when addressing employee burnout. Massachusetts General Hospital has been on the front lines of Covid-19. In “Six Lessons on Fighting Burnout from Boston’s Biggest Hospital,” two MGH executives, Joshua J. Baugh and Ali S. Raja, share what they’ve learned about preventing burnout after surveying a group of physicians. They include steps to ensure doctors are experiencing rewarding work, autonomy, fairness and transparency, a reasonable workload, and a sense of community. In a video titled “How to Beat Loneliness–and Make Friends–at Work,” Jennifer Moss helps Christine Liu, host of “Christine vs. Work,” address a key cause of WFH burnout. Finally, in “What I Learned When I Was Burned Out,” Ryan Caldbeck, formerly the CEO of the company he founded, explains what he learned from his own burnout and how his company (where he’s now executive chairman) addresses burnout among its employees.
