Hi, I’m just looking for a little advice. I had a lumpectomy on Wednesday. All went well and I got home on Wednesday evening.
Am coping with pain relief, when’s it ok to be up, and moving around? I’m worried I do too much too quickly. Thank you

Hello GR1,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat. Just to let you know, I have moved your thread to our Ask the Nurses topic area and one of our nurses will respond to you very soon.

Hello and thanks for posting

It’s still early days post your operation, but it sounds like you’re doing very well. Everyone is very different in their recovery, so you may well find different responses to your post.

You may find the following information here on your operation and recovery helpful

Generally, most people are able to be up and about the day after their operation. Depending on how well you cope with anaesthetics, some people may still feel a bit woozy and will want to rest. Moving around though, initially around the house, is usually to be recommended. I think most people listen to their body and if you feel tired or certain activities cause you pain, then stop and rest. Gradually increasing the amount you do daily is better than trying to get back to what you were doing immediately before the operation.

I should imagine you may have been given some exercises to do for your arm and it’s important that these start after the operation to ensure you have good movement of the arm on the affected side. You can have a look at some exercises suggested here, but do check with your breast care nurse

If you have any concerns about any symptoms you are worried about, do get back in touch with the nurse.

Please do give us a ring if you would like to talk anything through with us. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best

Wanda
