Hi I saw a consultant yesterday about a lump in my breast which is about 4 1/2 centimeters wide. After a mamagram, ultra sound he said he was 95% sure it was cancer but wanted to do some punch biopsies. I went totally numb at this point and couldn’t take anything in. My husband said the consultant said that due to my diligence it was caught early and that it had not went in to the lump nodes. Am due to see him again on Saturday and he wants to do a lumpectomy next week. I hVe a few questions if that’s ok. 1. Can you tell by an ultra sound that it hasn’t went in to the lymph nodes 2. If it hasn’t went in to the lymph nodes can the cancer spread to other parts in my body
thank yoi

Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,
I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand how overwhelming it must feel when you are first told about it all.
It is really only when the doctor has preformed the biopsy on your breast and the pathologist has looked at your cells under the microscope will they be able to give you more information. He can get a good idea from what he has seen on the ultra sound about the size of the lump. If the doctors confirm that it is cancer then they will probably look at your lymph nodes in more detail to make sure that they are not involved.
I would really take one step at a time. We do have some information on our website about the different tests that are used to help diagnose beast cancer. Have a look here
If the cancer is an early cancer and it is not found in the lymph nodes it does make it less likely that it will spread to another part of the body but no one can be completely certain.
It may help to make a list of questions to ask the doctor when you are seen on Saturday.
If you would like to give us a ring to talk any of this through then please do so. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Best Wishes,
Catherine

Thank you for your reply Catherine. My husband has said that He hopes that after our chat with the consultant on Saturday we may have a clearer picture as to what I am facing. My mind has just went in to overdrive at the moment and can’t think straight.
