I’m hoping someone can help please. I’ll try and explain the best I can but my head is so confused and I don’t really know where to begin

My partner went into surgery yesterday for a TURBT for bladder cancer.

The doctor told us beforehand that he would have all the Tumor removed (3.7cm in size) and then the next day he would have chemotherapy into his catheter, left in for an hour and then rinsed out. Depending on how he was feeling he was told he would be ok to come home today.

Since yesterday, we have been very much left in the dark about how the operation went and what happens from now.

I am unable/not allowed on to the ward when the doctor does the rounds in the morning as it’s not visiting times.

The doc came round this morning and explained what had happened during surgery to my partner, but as he suffers from anxiety and was also highly sedated due to pain meds, he didn’t understand properly and didn’t take much in so that he could relay it back to me. All he was able to tell me was that they didn’t take the cancer out and that the doc said he’s not cured?!!

I managed to speak to the nurse as she was next to him when I called and she said that they did the TURBT but they didn’t remove the whole tumor, I asked why and she said “they probably couldn’t reach it?!”

But they had previously done many scans, they knew where the tumor was located and how big it was so surely they should have been able to remove it?

So anyway, they have taken some (most?) out and have sent it off for biopsy. We should get the results back in 2 weeks.

We were then told that he isn’t having the chemotherapy into his bladder either now.  I have no idea why and the nurse didn’t really know either.

Im so confused right now. Why didn’t they take the whole tumor out? Why aren’t they doing the chemo?

Can anyone shed shed any light please or have any experience? Thank you so much.

Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear about your partners situation.  I can understand that when you were told originally how he was going to be treated and then it was changed it must have been quite unsettling.

With your partner’s permission you could see if you could see the doctor to find out what is going on.  Your partner may have been given a CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist).  If he has been given one they may be a useful person to also explain.

It is difficult to try and second guess what is happening.  They maybe are waiting for the results of the biopsy to work out what treatment they may offer him.  All suspected cancer patients are discussed in an MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team meeting).  At this meeting oncologists, doctors, pathologists and radiologists meet to discuss each individual case to decide what the next steps are.  The nurses may be unsure what is happening until his particular case is discussed.

At the end of the day I am sure that his medical team have his best interests and want to give him the most appropriate treatment. I can’t really comment on why they did not take it all out.  It is only the doctors who will be able to explain that to you both.

Hopefully when your partner is feeling more comfortable he will be able to talk to the doctors.

You may find it more helpful to give us a ring to talk this through

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Best Wishes,

Catherine
