Hi – My brother had to have fluid drained a few weeks ago and after tests he was told there were cancer cells in the fluid. He is in for an operation on thursday and we will have results a week or so later. I had googled lots and have seen a lot about malignant pleural effusion which doesnt sound good. He is very upbeat and doesnt want to talk acout anything really until he has results. He is 60 and smoked for 35 years – he has shortness of breath and some shoulder pain but doesnt feel terrribly unwell.
From what I have read its not good news but I cant speak to anyone to find out – any advice?

I was sorry to learn about your brother. This must be a difficult time for you all.
An effusion can develop when cancer cells have spread into the pleura( lining of the lungs).A pleural effusion can be a symptoms of several types of cancer including lung cancer. But until your brother has his surgery and his results are known his doctors will not be able to tell you anymore just now.
Waiting to find out more is never easy but I’m afraid there’s no real way round this.Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. But until you both know more it’s natural to worry.
