Alabama scenic drives offer both natural beauty and a dose of history. The links at the bottom of this page will take you to articles about two such drives — Selma to Montgomery Byway and Talladega Scenic Drive — that contain photos, highlights, and detailed maps.
With its roots in agriculture, Alabama remained an impoverished state until World War II, when industry and technology began to develop. But it is best known as the place where Martin Luther King Jr. led a march — and a movement — in 1965. That journey is recounted along the Selma to Montgomery Byway.
Alabama’s beauty seems comes naturally and is carefully cultivated by the many green thumbs who live in the state. (Gardens along the scenic routes are common, and don’t be afraid to stop and admire one). The state’s natural assets are perfectly illustrated along Talladega Scenic Drive.
Here’s a preview of what you’ll find in our articles about Alabama scenic drives:
Walk the 43-mile route taken by Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of civil rights supporters. Twenty memorials along this historic highway tell the story of the march and its results.
Drive from the Talladega National Forest to Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in Alabama, and take advantage of recreation along the way. The highlights include Talladega Superspeedway, where NASCAR races are run.
