The Most Effective Way to Manage Change in Business and Life

“Change Management” is the personal and professional term of the last 10 years. It’s a somewhat nebulous term. Change Management is valuable in the sense that… well… effectively managing change is imperative for survival. But what does that mean for you? Well, here’s what:

No matter what stage we’re at in life, we know that we need to keep moving forward because times are always changing. If we stay stationary and refuse to adapt with new technologies, job circumstances or personal relationships, we risk falling behind or inadvertently harming our loves ones and friends. The evolutionary process is simply a major part of life.

I’ve seen a very high demand for the functional, change management expertise at Fortune 100 companies and in both federal and city governments. It’s also valued by many of us in our personal relationships. We instinctively resent or show displeasure with those who are so stubborn, they will not change their habits or moods to suit anyone else. Stubbornness leads to selfishness, a behavior that inherently only serves the individual.

Change Management, is a topic I know a lot about. Both on a personal and professional level.

My adult life, including my personal and professional pursuits, has taught me what it means to evolve and manage change. Which makes sense, because life is all about change. The sooner that we grasp and embrace that concept, the quicker we acclimate ourselves to living a more centered, purposeful life.

We must adapt and continue to grow while operating in a fluid, and at times, chaotic environment. To embrace change- evolution- is to embrace life. Change, is ironically the only constant in life.

I’ve embraced change because deep-down, like the great Paul Hewson (Bono) once said, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. That’s not to say I don’t know what I”m looking for- an important distinction to draw. Only that I’m still in pursuit of a dream and life that require patience, hard work and faith.

My aim is to find balance between doing the things that I love and, performing at a high-level with confidence and persistence. My definition of success matches the strategic vision and goals I have set for myself.

I want to positively change the lives of the people I meet through my coaching, speaking and writing.

Maybe I’m speaking to you- no matter where you are currently in your career or personal life- in saying that many of us don’t have it all figured out yet. And the not-knowing isn’t such a bad thing. It’s actually a great thing once we learn how to harness the power. Not knowing lends to creativity, ideas and greater reflection on who we want to be.

Intuition and self-awareness enable us to realize when we’re not necessarily at our destiny in life- both professionally and personally. We can reinvent ourselves through strategic thinking, re-branding and self-evaluation. This high-plain of thinking peels back the layers of who we are, or who others think we are, to the core of our being.

I write the words, “Live Boldly,” frequently. Living boldly, for me, means confidently carrying out the plans that I set out to accomplish. Living boldly means trusting in the plan for our lives. First, we need to believe that each one of us has a plan. Living boldly means achieving peace of mind, success on your terms, personal discovery and joy throughout your day.

When you have these things, life begins to come to you naturally, clearly and freely. You achieve a life in harmony and rhythm; one where you exude confidence in your thoughts, words and actions.

Living boldly means living with an open mind and open heart. Living boldly requires keen self-awareness, self-control and an insatiable desire for inspiration and new ideas. To live boldly is to exhibit self-motivating behavior that stimulates your thoughts, stokes the fire inside of you and gets you out of your comfort zone.

You learn to coach yourself through adversity and power through difficult times with a smile on your face and poise in how you handle your affairs. Boldness is a state of mind, acquired through faith, experience and uncompromising determination.

Change is no easy thing to manage, which is why many businesses pay millions of dollars to companies to help them through transitions. It’s why so many people seek psychiatric help or coaching services to help them navigate the choppy waters of life.

The difficulty of managing change is why some people refuse to evolve with the times- and as a result, get left behind. Even as I write this, I find that I’m challenged every day to stare adversity in the eye and steel my mind to effectively manage the change that comes my way.

In today’s world, we never know just how secure our jobs are or sadly, whether everyone in our life is always looking out for us. The stronger we can become in how we handle our emotions and prepare ourselves for change, the better positioned we will be when adversity comes to challenge us. And it always does, in some shape, form or fashion.

Around the time that Daniel Goleman popularized the term, “emotional intelligence,” businesses and individuals began to value and place more emphasis on self-awareness and, one’s ability to master the relationships they have with others and themselves.

Within relationship management is the strength that comes with managing change, whether it be conflict management or one’s ability to recognize when it’s time to adapt and take initiative. In many ways, I feel as I look at this chart that self-awareness deserves its overarching spot as the umbrella under which all of these characteristics lie.

Self-awareness cannot be taught from a textbook. It comes from our parents, friends, school teachers, life experiences and the relationship we have with ourselves and God. Self-awareness is given life when we cultivate the faith we have in ourselves and others and when we desire to grow and thirst for knowledge.

Self-awareness comes from analyzing how we react to the stimuli around us and in turn, how we proactively manage our lives to encounter each moment of the day.

Self-mastery comes not when you learn to predict future outcomes or guess correctly at what will come your way but rather, when you thoughtfully consider all of the ways to positively affect a particular situation.

Then, you can effectively react to outcomes that you did not foresee or expect. As Louis Pasteur once said, “Fortune favors the prepared mind.” The words I desire to live by, Audaces Fortuna Iuvat, translate from Latin to mean- Fortune favors the bold!

The only safeguard against an uncertain future is a prepared mind that is constantly learning, willing to adjust and resolute in purpose. That’s self-awareness. That mindset is how you can manage change to better manage and take control of your life.
