How can you tell between the two?

 Hello and thanks for posting.

It is fair to say that symptoms can be similar for both Gerd and throat cancer. The only way to really know is by a doctor arranging some tests. The most common test is normally an endoscopy (passing a camera down the throat to have a look).  Sometimes biopsies (tissue sample looking at the cells under a microscope) are taken. Sometimes more information is needed to help the doctors know what is going on so a scan also may be organised.

We also have some information about oropharyngeal cancers here and the common symptoms of these here that you might find useful to read.

Unfortunately tests and the results can take time to come back and this can be an unsettling and worrying time. Some people report keeping themselves busy and their mind on other things can be helpful at times like these.

I hope this is helpful. if you have any more questions do get back in touch. If you would like to talk anything through with a nurse our number is 0808 800 4040, we are here Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm.

Best wishes,

Naomi
